Nowhere & Invisible

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) invited me to make a film about statelessness within Malaysia. At least 10,000 people are denied nationality in West Malaysia, with the numbers in East Malaysia currently unknown. Those without nationality are not allowed an education, access to jobs or healthcare, and are often ostracised in communities. Due to the efforts of local NGO, the Development of Human Resources in Rural Areas, and support from UNHCR, the number of stateless people has reduced in the last ten years, from an estimate of 40,000 persons in 2009, to currently 12,000. This film tells an intimate story of one family who has faced many challenges in trying to obtain Malaysian citizenship.
