A new game in town
With an estimated population of over 2.5 million people, Greater Western Sydney (GWS) encompasses a huge region of the metropolitan area of Sydney, making it one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. GWS also has the most multicultural suburbs in the country, with 38% of its population speaking a language other than English at home. The enormity of this region is reflected in its economy, with it being the third largest in Australia, behind Sydney (CBD) and Melbourne.
Seeing its potential for everything on a grand scale, the AFL (Australian Football League) decided to grab on to its coattails and introduce a new AFL team to the area, the Greater Western Sydney Giants. At the beginning many saw it as a miscalculated move because western Sydney was traditionally rugby league territory, but the AFL knew better, and so far, they’ve been proven right.
This radio story takes you into the heart of GWS as locals discuss they how feel about having a new game in town, and the movers and shakers talk about what it will mean for football and the area.
