One year on
The leading cause of death in Australia for people aged between 15 and 44 years of age is suicide, with 75% of those deaths being males. It’s a silent epidemic that shockingly isn’t getting any better. This is one of those stories. A close friend, who was like a brother to me, and who on paper seemingly had it all, great job, popular amongst his peers, excellent prospects for the future, but who then killed himself.
I wrote this piece on the 12-month anniversary of his death. It’s not overly sentimental, instead I write candidly about the pain his absence left, and the practicality of getting on with it when someone suddenly exits your life.
